A former U.S. diplomat, 57 year old Kathy Kriger, in March, opened
a 'Rick's Cafe' in Casablanca, Morocco. The elegant restaurant is
open seven days a week. Kriger says she watched the classic film
hundreds of times to study atmosphere, lighting and lines. She scouted
for locations and decided to open Ricks in Casablanca's medina, a
bustling labyrinth of narrow streets and shops. It took her months
to get various authorizations, including a liquor license. Kriger
wants to improve U.S.-Moroccan communications and hopes to improve
images of U.S. americans by doing business there. The new Ricks
has the same atmosphere as the Hollywood original. It's a white
villa near the port with palm trees flanking the door. Inside are
arched passageways and traditional hanging lamps of colored glass.
And not a single photo of Bogie on the walls. Kriger says 'it's no
longer just a film, not a museum, but a reality' as waiters in
traditional fez caps and wide-legged pants serve customers at
candlelit tables. However, you won't find Sam at the piano, rather
Issam Chabaa who plays songs from the 40s and 50s. On Sunday nites
Kriger serves popcorn, chili con carne and screens Casablanca. - AH.
