It's well known to most videophiles that the theatrical version of the trilogy is released first, later to be followed by the extended versions: one usually slimmed down, the other for completists who want extra packaging, statues, and what not.Frankly, I'm glad that Peter Jackson has the DVD format to present the movies in extended versions. In both cases (the first two movies), I found the extended versions more coherent and not just "fattened" with extraneous scenes.
I don't see this as wringing more money out of the public. Some movie goers just want the theatrical versions, others want the extended versions. There is no obligation to own both.
