I don't think there must be a conflict between the soul and materialism - I know many cases when they coexist perfectly, the issue is the degree.

And in the film itself, as you remember the girl stayed not for some political or other "high brow" reason, but most apparently because she was smitten by the Paris LIFE... The scene where she stands smiling under the rain looking at all those lights was important.
