I am not going to remark much on the movie itself. Everyone knows what it is about. It is a strongly argued polemic against Bush and the Iraq war. It is strident, manipulative and at times emotionally powerful. One's opinion on the movie will depend primarily on one's political orientation going in. I suspect no minds will be changed. But this was a most extraordinary movie experience. I often stop off on my way home and see a movie in the late afternoon. These are usually very sparsely attended.
Today there was a crowd of people milling around the theater. I got there 1/2 hour before the movie and the theater was already about half full. The later evening shows were sold out. By the time the movie started, the theater was essentially full, I think there might have been a few seats down in the front.
Political documentary as summer blockbuster? Totally bizarre, but it seems to be true.
There was clapping from the audience at several points during the movie and sustained applause afterwards. I've never seen anything like this, and I go to LOTS of movies.
