Courage in the face of insurmountable evil.Diverse beings working within their racial traits and strenghts to overcome desperate odds together.
A historical and cultural understanding of each race and character in LoTR is neccessary. It's a fantasy world and needs to be understood in full context to gain everything there is to gain from the film.
Try the books starting with The Hobbit then move on to LoTR.
