AudioHead,We can only hope that Cruise plays the man who is the first to approach the alien capsule and says "Welcome to California" and is instantly vapourized. Perhaps Kevin Costner could be the priest who supervises the square dancing and is about the third person to get demoleculized while holding out the Crucifix. The remaining three hours will be much improved.
I'm not sure what Spielberg can do that will be on a grander scale than "Independence Day" which is really the same story, thuugh the aliens in that one are defeated by a computer virus rather than a biological one. If you think about it, a super advanced alien race would probably anticipate both these kinds of attacks: remember the 30-day quarantine of the Apollo 11 atronauts upon their return? and the availability of Norton anti-virus as used by 10 years olds in suburban New Jersey? Those travelling hundreds of millions of miles will have had time to think on the road..
Actually, my favourite line in all science fiction is from "Independence Day": "If you wanted to be an astronaut, you never should have married a stripper."
