As I posted a couple of days ago, I watch this 1955 Cinemascope film every Labor day. It is directed by Joshua Logan and is a film adaptation of a William Inge stage play. Drifter William Holden arrives in a small Kansas town on the morning of Labor Day and becomes attracted to local five and dime sales gal Kim Novack before learning that she is the sweetie of the man he's come to see about a job. That man is Cliff Robertson (his first film role) and he is the town's rich boy, heir to a huge grain elevator business, and a former college room mate of Holden's. Other characters include Rosalind Russell and Arthur O'Connell, who almost steal the show in secondary leads (particularly Russell, who should have won a Best Supporting Actress for her role as a spinster school teacher. All attend the town's annual Labor Day Picnic and disasterous results ensue with police involvement. There is a happy ending, however.
Ironically, the last laserdisc transfer has better colors than the DVD (which has better sound), a fact evident in a scene with lots of watermelons whose color is, well, horrid.
Most fampous for the famous dance sequence with Holden and Novack, to an intertwining of "Moonglow" and "Theme from Picnic"
