patrickU, I am sure you have read Truffaut's great interview with Hitchcock. He told Truffaut that he wished he could have shot "I Confess" with a different ending! He also loved the way Montgomery Clift walked in his robes, and used several shots of Clift walking to suggest (I can't remember the exact quote...most of my books are in storage awaiting a move) something along the lines of seriousness, forward motion, and grim adherence to the task. You are right, it is one of Hitch's most serious films...and knowing how he wished he could have added one more shot of Clift walking at the end makes you realize just how much trouble Clift was in! Clift took his role very seriously, too...I believe part of his preparation was learning how to do at least part of the Latin mass!
