"Jean de Florette" and "Manon of the Spring"

This really one big film, meant to be seen together or at least within a short time of each other. I recall when it came out in its very first video incarnation this was not clear and many renters came back for "Manon" only to find that it was out.

The story is a dieliberately paced tale of two generations of rival families in rural France early in the 20th century. Like "Chinatown", the plot revolves around water, its availablity, and the consequences of a dry spell. There is a huge surprise at the end only vaguely alluded to in the build up.

The current DVD's have cleaerer sub-titles than the laserdisc but you have to manipulate your screen shape to get at them.
