I have been thinking about this film most of the day today, and it is growing on me... like a good wine that was allowed to breathe.I was a bit tired last night, so it is taking me longer to absorb it, and I am raising its status to a true gem today, to a must see for anyone interested in good movies in general, and Italian cinema of that period in particular.
And the ending... it is simply masterful, reminiscent of both Nights of Cabiria and Bicycle Thief... with rain-soaked Signore mumbling to herself "I will not end up like them!"... oblivious of the reality and yet so human...
BTW - Ettore Scola contributed to both the story and screenplay - so here is your tie-in, Patrick!
