Early sixty. When I saw this film back then I did not like it. ( in fact four sketches )
When shortly I saw it on DVD, It remind me who did them...Visconti...De Sica...Monicelli...Fellini...So I had to see them again!
The truth is that it did not change my view, not for an iota.
Fellini´s film was a statement against the sexual oppresion of the Italy back then. It lack the Maestro spirit and is plainly boring, just the here and there of the master´s hand.
Sica is a little better but still not brillant, Sophia Loren playing ( being ) the prize for a tombola, typically Italian, but no deeph.
Visconti´s is the best, having Romy Schneider at his side you feel that they teamed up very well, the subject is tragic, in one word are our spouses all our personal prostitutes? The answer is yes in a way.
In the last part, who has been cut because it did make the film too long at the Cannes Festival of 1962, Monicells work is now restaured on this DVD.
I start to look at a part of it and...stopped. I will make another effort tonight and if worth I may comment.....
