This depressing tale takes place in snowy rural New Hampshire in early November and is based on a Russell Banks novel about a part time alcoholic cop (Nick Nolte)trying to piece together his relationship with his estranged young daughter (he's divorced and doesn't have custody), a questionable hunting accident involving a hunter guide friend, his relationship with a local waitress (Sissy Spaceck), and most importantly a relationship with his elderly abusive and decidedly alcoholic father, played by James Coburn. Wilhem Dafoe has a small part as the younger BU professor brother who narrates the story. Holds one's interest but overall a real downer.
