OK, so you play Axel, and I will play Rasputin. Wrong era? So what? That will make the movie more interesting, I think... Rasputin having a wild sexual romance with Maria... with Axel watching through the hole in the portrait on the wall.
Public loves love intrigues, and I can assure you 99% will not notice anything wrong... certainly not here, in the US.
