Anyone know this film?

A relative was describing this over the holiday and couldn't recall the title to find it. Film was maybe from the 80s.
It features a military pilot who's crashed his jet. He's bandaged throughout the film and doesn't do anything. A second guy watches over him and reads the injured pilot's journal. The movie goes through many flashbacks of the injured pilot's life, tales from the journal.
