Let's face it - the film is just plain dumb. So much so it made me uncomfortable watching it. And I have seen aplenty.Maurice Chevalier is as unpleasant as ever, with his ugly lower lip really getting on my nerve, and his manners not helping much either.
Fortunately for us, there were two charming ladies - Claudette Colbert and Miriam Hopkins, both lovely, but the story is so dumb they couldn't put any convincing performances.
A great director's mental block?
As the movie ended my wife and I stayed silent for a while, then I said "This was dumb" and she answered: "That is exactly what I wanted to say".
When you compare that kaka with something like It Happened One Night they seem to represent completely different kinds of movies. One - witty and elegant, and the other... well, did Lubitsch REALLY had to make that dreck?
