The late Artie Shaw's tune, "Nightmare" figures prominently on the soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's latest effort and Shaw is mentioned as a rival for actress Ava Gardner's hand. The three hour movie takes off like a shot, after a brief Citizen Kane-like interlude of Howard Hughes' mother bathing him when a boy. The film held my interest throughout and the time spent did not seem like three hours. Cate Blanchette is excellent as Katherine Hepburn and as the film progresses one accepts DiCaprio as Hughes to a greater extent. The flying scenes and crashes are extremely well done and of course the director's love of and knowledge of older films is on display. The audience I was with seemed to enjoy it and laughed out loud at the appropriate moments. Worth catching on the big screen.
