Otto Preminger produced and directed this story of U.S. Senate machinations regarding the controversial nomination of a Secretary of State (Henry Fonda) by an ill President (Francot Tone). A host of other brighter ans lesser Hollywood lights (Don Murray, Will Geer, Walter Pidgeon, etc. show up --Paul Ford is particularly miscast or maybe it's me since I think of him as a comic actor, not a U>S. Senator). After a rocky start the film actually becomes interesting along the way. Charles Laughton is memorable as a curmudgeon veteran Southern senator who leads the opposition against Fonda. In Panavision, mono, and black and white. Based on a novel by Alan Drury. Worth seeing once.
