Yes, the consumer always loses in a format war, but perhaps the competition will encourage the studios to release LOTS of titles early on (as opposed to DVD roll out, which didn't gain momentum till years after launch) to promote their format over the rival (blu-ray).
Hardware will be expensive at first, we will want to buy universal video players (just as we bought universal audio players [SA-CD & DVD-A]) . . . I'm still excited about high-definition DVD roll out, despite the format war crap. Judging by SA-CD and DVD-A rivalry, it will take YEARS to resolve . . . unfortunately . . .
