That´s a film by the Taviani brothers, of "Padre Padrone" fame, about what happened at a small Tuscany village while the American forces were making their progress freeing Italy from German and Italian fascists, as it was remembered by a mother who was a seven-year old child at the time.It is far from perfect, with pretty much overacting at times, and told at sweeps, but there´s heart in it, with a fierce tenderness showing all along the film. And there are some deeply moving scenes, bittersweet and poetic as only the best neorealist films have shown.
At first sight, it may be not so impressive, but it grows deep inside the viewer once the lights are off... and this is one of the few films that gain through time, becoming better the second time you see it (I´ve seen it three times now, along twenty years, and I´ve found it better every time...)
Probably not many here will ever see it, as it won´t be easy to find it nowadays. But if by chance it comes in your way...
