I saw both these Olmi films just recently on Criterion DVD's. Had orginally seen them in the late 70's at Carnegie Hall Cinema in NYC.What strikes me about these two films is their subtly stated condemnation of the way work has made into a brutalizing experience.Because of economic necessity, people will open themselves to all sorts of humilation. I think Olmi's point is it doesn't have to be so.
Instead of lecturing, he lets the obvious be seen. Perhaps, Olmi is quietly making a case case against capitalism?
