"The Sand Pebbles"

Robert Wise directed this sprawling advaenture about a U.S. Navy gunboat in backwater China in 1926. Steve McQeen stars as a master engine mate, along with a young Candace Bergen as a missionary and Richard Crenna as the boat's captain. McQueen gets invoolved with Bergen, befriends a coolie, and gradually becomes what the crew feels is a jinx. Thre is a thrilling and well done attack on a river barracade toward the end. The 4.0 sound on the DVD has directional dialog with pin point imaging. The cinematography is sumptuous. Very enjoyable. The title comes from what the crew call themselves, a corruption of the boat's name, the San Pablo.
