Totally agree

He makes that film, which was unfairly maligned (I don't generally like this line of argumentation, but in this case I think it's true) by male film critics who came to the film expecting to be indicted by some kind of feminist manifesto. I think Meg Ryan, who would otherwise have been praised for taking on the challenge of her role, was grossly abused by the critics.

Jennifer Jason Leigh turned in a great performance as well.

The film isn't perfect--it suffers from pretension here and there, but, for example, I don't think Ryan's character was supposed to be entirely sympathetic; if the viewer find her hard to bear, credit that as intentional. But stylistically it's exactly what's missing from films of that genre today.
