If you want to experience a big contrast...

...watch "The Lower Depths" (aka Donzoko) and "Gummo" on the same day.

Donzoko is a film you can't help but experience the same emotions as the characters (the warmth of the old man, the joy of the accapella singing, the optimism of the drunk/actor, the cynicism of the fallen leader). Kurosawa splices a narrative and stage play together quite seemlessly.

Gummo is a film that drives you away from any concern about those who are emotionally, mentally, economically, and/or physically crippled. Instead the audience is prodded to look down upon the poverty level midwesterners portrayed (or taken straight from real interviews) in the film. One can't help but notice the angle at which lone character profiles are shot and the length of time these shots take up in the film as if to make the audience feel superior to the onscreen characters. Seems like the type of film Andy Kaufman would have made to play a "comedic event" on an audience.
