Good Bye, Lenin!

German film about a teacher who was a member of the Communist party in East Germany, who saw her son in a march for freedom of the press. She has a heart attack, and falls into a coma. While she is in a coma, the wall is broken down. When she comes out of her coma, the doctors tell her children that any excitement can kill her. He is afraid that if she finds out that the Berlin wall has fallen, she will die.

So he attempts to create a world in which she thinks that the party still runs the show. He sets up fake newscasts with a friend who fancies himself a filmmaker, he searches the garbage for old cans and bottles of foods that are no longer available, and he hires old students to sing for her. In one scene, she sees a Coca-Cola sign being draped outside her window, so her son makes a newscast claiming that Coke was actually an East German invention.

I would give a slight recommendation. I think the film played it a little safe - it was rife for outright comedy, but they held back. It may have been more on an insider movie, one that a viewer from Germany would appreciate more.

I also saw Bon Voyage, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but that one appears to have been previously discussed, so I'll defer.
