Win a Date with Tad Hamilton

This weekend's films ran from forgettable (Connie and Carla, Hangman's Curse) to outright awful and stupid (Jeepers Creepers 2). When Win a Date with Tad Hamilton came upon the schedule, I was not expecting much, based upon what I had heard, and from what I knew of the plot. I was pleasantly surprised.

Kate Bosworth starts as a West Virginian (insert joke) who wins a date with Tad Hamilton, hunky Hollywood star. She goes to L.A. for the date, which is pretty tame. She strikes him as possessing the goodness and wholesomeness he lacks. So he flies to West Virginia to spend more time with her, and ends of buying a house there. Of course, there is a local boy, somewhat nerdy, who has know her his entire life, and is in love with her.

As I posted elsewhere, romatic comedies are generally predictable, and what separates one from the other is what happens in between. Is it intelligently written? Is it well acted? Are the actors likeable? One end of the spectrum is When Harry Met Sally. The other end is One Fine Day (or One Long Day, as my wife calls it).

Is Tad Hamilton predictable? Yes. It is also surprisingly fun, light, well acted, and, in parts, very funny. Nathan Lane co-stars as an agent, and Gary Cole turns in another offbeat, very good performance as her father.

This is not the film for people who consider themselves sophisticates, who do not like to laugh and have fun, and for whom a movie is more akin high art, and for whom a film is like a cocktail party with their bosses. But is a good view for people who like to laugh, have a good time, and who like romantic comedies that are more intelligent than the typical fare. So please do not post in response that it was not realistic, predictable, etc. Guess what, there is no Oz either.

Kate Bosworth: I previously saw her in Blue Tide, Wonderland, Rules of Attraction, Remember the Titans, and The Horse Whisperer. Her performance in Blue Tide was of a tough surfer, and in Wonderland, of a drugged out hanger on. She clearly has range, and expect to see more of her in the future.
