Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence

Saw it at my friend's house, in 7.1 on a finely tuned 65" Mitsubishi RP-HDTV.

Not quite as good as the first. A lot more philosophy, which drags on a bit. Even less explaination as to what's going on than the first. Not quite as much action, but the storyline is much simpler as well.

The parade scene about 2/3 of the way in is amazing, probably the most detail I've seen in any animation. Along with the begining of Toy Story 2, it's a great visual system workout. I've seen a DivX test CD that uses clips from that segment, and it's good material.

The DVD comes with a couple extras, however there isn't an english language track (useful for repeated viewings when you want to pay attention to what's on the screen instead of reading) The annoying part is they screwed up the subtitles, and used the closed-captioning track. Now you get "Bird Sounds" and "Wooshing sound" along with the regular subtitles. The publisher is issuing new DVD's but if you were considering a purchase I'd wait until they redid it completely, with a decent English dub and all.

Overall, I'd say not as good as the first. The storyline was tighter, but too much hit-you-over-the-head philosophy for the little plot there was. If you didn't like the first you certainly wouldn't like this one.

70/100 on my absolute scale (where 100 is the perfect animated film)
