a tale of two epics (sort of)

I was on a long flight the other day and decided to give Alexander a try -- hesitant to do so after all of the bad publicity and reactions. Well, the bad publicity and criticisms were well warranted. Egads, this was hard even for an airline movie (and a very captive audience). I'm still not certain what accent Jolie was trying to use and it wasn't clear why she bothered since everyone had a mix of british, scottish, irish, and american accents in any case. (I think she was doing a weird Russian accent but I don't wish to insult Victor or others). I can't being to fathom how music was used in this movie so poorly and to no proper effect (banal upbeat orchestral scores during "dramatic and negative" battle scenes).

Anyway, this really makes me think that Oliver Stone is a disaster as a director. (never been that big a fan but I did really enjoy Platoon)

Contrast this with my second movie watched -- Ray. I can't remember enjoying a movie as much as this one and I believe fully in Jamie Foxx's accolades now that I've seen his portrayal of Ray Charles. If you are one of the few (such as me) who haven't seen this movie then rush out and get the dvd (I'm going to).

All I can say is that I'm glad I watched Ray after Alexander -- it helped me rinse that bad taste out of my mouth.
