"Cat's Meow"

Peter Bogdanovitch directed this tale of a Hollywood legend concerning the mysterious death of producer Thomas Innes on William Randolh Heart's yacht during a 1924 weekend party off the coast of California. The script has it that Charlie Chaplin was having an affair with Hearst galpal Marion Davies and in a fit of rage on the last night Hearst shot Innes, thinking he was Chaplin. All the guests agreed to a big hush hush and Innes' body was cremated without an autopsy and the death was said by Hearst's on board physician to be related to stomach problems. The police only conducted a peripheral investigation. Legend has it that Hollywood gossip queen Louella Parsons got a life long contract from Hearst after she agreed to silence about everything. A very enjoyable look at the times, morals, and fashions of the Hollywood rich in the twenties.
