Usually, I'm entertained by Almodovar's breezy, semi-campy efforts, though several hours afterwards I can hardly remember a thing about them except they had transexuals, homosexuals, and lots of make-up.
This time, A has decided to get serious and tackle a current topic, the abuse of young boys by priests.
Unfortunately, he commits the error many directors used to make when they filmed rape scenes...they made them erotic. A shows his characters enjoying themselves and their lifestyles so much that one would expect them to thank the priest.
I know, I know, the story is told from several points of view. But, this gimmick fails, as well. By trying to make the stories overlap, to be "seamless," they just blend together. Anyhow, since all we see of the characters is their ambition, greed, and sex-sex-sexuality, one really doesn't care who's corn-holing whom and for what end.
Bernal in drag, incidentally, bears a most disturbing likeness to...Julia Roberts. They could be twins sister, really.
