I had to rewatch the last part of the film tonight... as my wife slept through it last time. Each time I watch either the original or this film, it produces deep emotional impact in me. I do see the weaknesses in the film, all the imperfections, but the subject of tremendous human suffering is something close to my heart and it always affects me. I don't think one can watch the final scenes of the film and not be touched by it.
In the end I become forgiving of Kaira's poor performance, and all the silly things that Pasternak put in the story. Such is the power of works based on profound and important events - these events tend to elevate the weak works.
So if that film (and the original version) gave someone even a slight glimpse into what life was like during those tumultuous years, it was not created in vain.
So I don't regret having bought this film, with all its imperfections.
