He's beloved by middle-brow critics like those at The New Yorker, and if the same exact movie had been directed by some unknown hack, it would've been slammed or ignored. Lee's made some decent but ultimately middling films, though highly regarded by the bourgeosie, and his reputation among them earned him a free pass for this piece of nonsense.
