Just watched Ragtime, Randy Newman soundtrack

Movies from comedy to drama to your favorite Hollyweird Star.

and found the racist theme quite disturbing; tho' I loved the scenes of New York in the 'teens
James Cagney appears as a police chief, apparently his 1st role in 20 years
Tho' it seemed unevenly paced and awkwardly styled at times it was quite charming and I thought it was a gem, albeit a somewhat imperfect one...
Any opinions? Any other films like this?
