So you like woman's films? Jump right in!

Most of us know what that means... usually films based on woman-written story, directed by a woman, made with a woman's eye on things, and... for women.

If that is your cup of tea (and it ain't mine, as they all seem grossy deficient), then look no further than the 1998 Governess, starring Minnie Driver.

If you take all women's films in the world, mix them in one batch, then reduce, reduce so you have one dense soup, then you will get close to this film.

And it is not without some interest, mind you. There is even some soft porn thrown in and some dirty talk, just to make it more palatable to the bored SO's... I presume.

Plus, inspite of all its shortcomings, the film is beautiful. The scenery, the camerawork, the cinematography are quite lovely, and riding on the coattails of Girls with Pearl Earring it is another period costume drama, and while sharing similar shalowness it also offers visual pleasures not commonly found, together with at least some thought provoking moments, which is more than you normally get for your usual $3.75 rental fare these days.

Minnie does good job overall... she is funny at times, sexy at others, bitchy and pushy, arrogant and opportunistic, smart and even touching... all in one package, and mostly fun to watch.

The story is pure trash... stuff you would normally buy at the supermarket while your tomatos are being weighed, but that hardly matters, as it is still just a vehicle, a frame, not much more, and what the makers managed to throw on top is not bad, would not be bad even in a movie with far more serious aspirations, and to spurce all this up there is good deal of culture references (Jewish culture, 1830 London...) and wonderful music, all intertwined in such a package that make even the hardened "serious" movie buffs pause and simply spend that 115 minutes with it... not regretting it too much afterwards, and actually finding something to discuss when the credits start rolling.

As I said, hardly the worst two hours you can spend, and with all the caveats above, a fun movie.
