Here are some I can recommend (in no particular order). Some have already been mentioned in the last day or two, but I'll include them anyway:The chant of Jimmie Blacksmith - the true story of an aboriginal outlaw. Earthy style. Free of artifice.
The odd angry shot (starring Graham Kennedy who died two weeks ago) - a quintessentially Australian view of our participation in the Vietnam war. Quite unlike any other VN war movie ever made. Full of Aussie humour, but still a serious movie.
Bliss - made by the maker of Lantana. It has a surreal quality.
The year of living dangerously (starring Mel Gibson before he was a mega star) - the story of Indonesia's slide into dictatorship.
The year my voice broke - a country coming of age movie set in the early 1960s.
Walkabout (starring David Gulpilil) - a surreal and dreamy story of two children stranded in the outback.
Bad boy bubby (Nicholas Hope) - bizarre, futuristic, grungy, wandering type of movie which starts off well but gets a bit weird towards the end, but still an interesting movie.
Chopper (Eric Bana) - the "true" story of Mark "Chopper" Reid, Australia's most loved career criminal and lately comedian. Bana's rendition of Reid is remarkable (he captures his look, mannerisms and speech *perfectly*).
Romper Stomper (starring a young Russell Crowe) - a tad disjointed, but it has a certain grungy style. A movie about skinheads who like fighting Asian immigrants.
Kokoda front line (documentary) - made by Damian Parer who wrote the book on modern war journalism. In 1942 the Japanese were poised to invade northern Australia, but were stopped in the jungles of PNG by untrained Australian reservists (who were later joined by regulars from the middle east, and then by US forces). Scary stuff.
Enjoy. Doug ;-)
