1949 film starring Spencer Tracey and Katherine Hepburn as married lawyers. He works for the district attorney, she in private practice. A certain Doris Attinger, played by Judy Holliday, finds out her husband is cheating, and shoots at her husband and his concubine while in passionate throes. She claims that she was trying to scare them, and the way she shoots, that story is believable. But she accidentally shoots her husband in the arm.

The case is assigned to Spencer Tracey. The wife hires Katherine Hepburn. The film is basically a light comedy about their relationship before the case, the progression during the case, and after the case. The plot is merely a clothesline for Tracey and Hepburn. If you like these two going at it, then you will like Adam's Rib, if not, then look elsewhere.

This is the third film of their's I have seen, the other two being Desk Set and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. I think that Dinner was a product of it's time, and has not aged particularly well. Adam's Rib is more like their banter in Desk Set. I probably preferred that film overall.

I also think that this film demonstrates their opposing political views. Tracey was apparently conservative, and believed that actors should not display their beliefs. At the end of the film, he is offered an opportunity to run for Judge as a Republican. Apparently, Hepburn was much into women's rights, and was generally outspoken politically, despite advice from Tracey to the contrary. She contemplates running for Judge as a Democrat. I think these characters were close to their private lives. I suspect they had some of the same competitiveness in real life.

The D.V.D. does not contain any special features, other than a film trailer. The film is not earth shattering, and will not alter your life for having seen it. It is a pleasant romantic comedy, with an added battle of the sexes, men led by Spencer Tracey, women by Katherin Hepburn. This might be a good one to watch with your significant other. Who is right? Men, of course.
