The fault of most pure action films is that they create a mood that trivializes the action and undermine the suspense they're trying to effect because there doesn't really seem to be anything at stake. The fight sequences here, though, when they finally come, create an agonizing tension, not least for your not knowing (spoiler alert) that the main character is actually something of a badass. A brilliant move, really. He seems so docile and cowed you'd never guess the first fight would have the outcome it does.
But it's the sensitive, central character and his relationship with his children and childhood love that make the film. I only wish the cinematography had been more equal to his vision and appreciation of the world. Like the scene in which he pauses to enjoy a flowering tree. Visually, the film was a little on the pedestrian side, I thought.
An anachronism among anachronisms. Twilight samurai, indeed.
