Please read those comments a little more closely, especially mine, even though you may not agree.

I feel that the character Tim Robbins portrayed was believeable and the reason Tom Cruise killed him (i.e., to protect what was left of his family from certain death if they were revealed to the aliens) totally made sense. The kids, like them or not, were well fleshed out as well; obviously the kids had very little respect for their estranged father and only visited by court order or whenever he could function as a surrogate babysitter while the mother and her new husband traveled.

There was an apparent income difference as well which probably added to the wall separating the families, but the fact that this wasn't focused on to any significant degree doesn't take away from the story. It was alluded to, but not significantly enough to slow the pacing; Spielberg should be complimented on this, rather than criticized, because I think that it's evidence of his growing maturity as a filmmaker.
