The studio didn't like the title 'Sydney' and P.T. Anderson lost the fight, since it was his first feature, he just didn't have a leg to stand on and had to relent to using the studio's name for the project, 'Hard Eight.'****Don't read the rest of this if you haven't seen it*******
A script note(and again a SPOILER ALERT): Did you notice when Samuel L. Jackson is shaking Sidney down, and they both are sitting in his car outside the casino at night, and Jackson tells him that he knows of his reputation with the mob heavies back East, he says ...'Jimmy Gator'...'I know about all those guys.'
Jimmy Gator was the name of Philip Baker Hall's character in 'Magnolia'. That always just stuck in my head. FWIW.
