How about Without a Paddle for a recent example? Don't see the connection? A bunch of guys (usually white) resisting age and adult responsibility try to reclaim their youth on a road trip w/ old buddies. The scriptwriter pastes his/her philosophies prominently on the characters' sleeves. The difference was - Without a Paddle was fun, in a dumb way.Sorry, I didn't make it to the wallet scene. I bailed out during Giamatti's and Madsen's insipid dialogue sharing their deepest thoughts about their favorite varietals as a metaphor for sharing your deepest self w/ a new significant other.
I know we're (wife and I) in the minority on many of these movies. I don't know why. Anyway, try watching Sideways after seeing a revelatory and truly moving work like The Girl in the Cafe, and you might share our views.
Cheers,
Doug
