My girlfriend and I had originally planned to see "Penguins" and were put off by luke warm reviews. Instead we used the alternative 5 PM pre-dinner slot and saw Gus Van Sant's "Last Day's". Because I'd sat through "Gerry" I was not expecting "Good Will Hunting" or paint by numbers Hollywood fluff . Despite my open - minded expectations I was thinking about the $21.50 I spent and shifting in my seat within minutes of the film starting. Granted there was some nice cinematography and there was one good scene(the Detective -Ricky Jay- telling a story of the two magicians) but it didn't equate a good movie to me. I'm always one to support an artist with a unique , singular vision - but this thing really could have been edited down to a short sentence. Tortured Artist with a lack of spirituality is surrounded by users and party animals.
What's even more perplexing to me is the critics are seeing everything but the second coming in the symbolism between grunts and groans. The Kurt Cobain character literally speaks maybe ONE audible line. My biggest problem - Why did EVERYONE in the film have to so pathetic?
