...Widmark's character, while totally despicable, is very 3-dimensional based upon all his foibles. True, we don't empathize with him, but I think that's the point. We're supposed to see the dark side of humanity (and not just his character - the nightclub owner and his wife are equally monstrous) without any sentimental redemption. The only sympathetic characters, IMO, are Gene Tierney's, Herbert Lom's, and Grigorius.Doug
