Yes - I thought that DeNiro's performance in "True Confessions" was flat . To me , he almost appeared to be trying to remember his lines - which foreshadowed his many weak performances of late. After seeing this movie twice I still have no idea what he was going for , nor do I understand or have any insight into his character. Was he an intense , spiritual man ? Or a galavanting golfing priest? A charismatic dynamo? I dunno ! When DeNiro is "on" his characters simmer and capture my imagination . In this film , for me this did not happen. This is what I meant by "flat" - But by no means do I think he should he have played it as a "mobster" ... or as Rupert Pupkin.
