It was a project that Douglas was in to his eyeballs

A great deal of his money went into it. It was, in large part, his idea. Mann crossed him. Mann was gone.

I do have some time for Kirk. Unlike most of the Primo Machos in Hollywood he could actually hold his own in a fight. Especially in a boxing ring. One could actually believe Douglas had the courage to try to be a hero when he played one.

I do remember when the movie first came out queues around the block to get into it.

Kubrick finally warmed to the film and agreed to the first restoration on LaserDisc for Criterion. But "epics" were alien to Kubrick.

BTW. No one knows what actually happened to Spartacus. But the liklihood was that he was simply hacked to pieces in the final battle against Crassus.

As for Crassus . . . he got his arse killed against the Asyrians . . . all of his wealth did him no good whatsoever.

Enter Cæsar. The rest is a bit more familiar to our time.
