A great, somewhat under-appreciated film about love, sex, art and murder. We first meet Christopher Cross (Edward G Robinson) as an easily pleased, meek and mild banker on his way home from a 25 years of service party. A twist of fate thrusts him into an emotional and sexual awakening via an encounter with a manipulative prostitute (Joan Bennett) and her dangerous boyfriend, played with sinewy, sexy menace by a brilliant Dan Duryea. Poor Cross is played like a fiddle while the plot deepens and twists with more surprises than a second date. One feels like a voyeur spying on the naive, smitten Cross, while the deceit and treachery mount to fall like a ton of bricks, right down on to his doomed head. This movie is so good, I yearn for a time traveling machine to get me back to a world where men wore hats and screenwriters (Dudley Nichols) developed their characters. This script is filled with intricate twists and turns and spiked with irony, humor and sexuality. Edward G. Robinson is a pure pleasure!
(Scarlet Street wasn't even in the Top 1000 NY Times list! ... That list makes me so mad!)
