Eyes Without a Face is the 1059 French horror film starring Pierre Brasseur in lead role of a brilliant, albeit somewhat mad, surgeon. His performance is powerful and it dominates the film... the film where horror is meant to dominate.
There IS undeniable horror about this film, but it quickly becomes a bit shallow. In fact, the horror, or the promise of horror, rather, is replaced by VERY strong sense of unpleasantness.
I doubt this is exactly the effect the director Georges Franju was looking to create, but this is what he achived.
The film comes with the rather annoying music score by a Nino Rota wannabe composer, that definitely adds to the sense of suspence, but is grossly overdone.
There is no doubt some suspence and horror film lovers will appreciate this film, as it does fall squarely into that genre. But as it has not much to offer in other areas it will most likely remain just a curiosity, and not too exciting at that.
And yes, I have to warn you, the abovementioned unpleasantless is quite palpable.
