Not since Station Agent have I been mesmerized by a slowly plodding, seemingly non-linear story line filled with mundane characters. How does one explain Millenium Mambo? The story of a young woman being narrated in third person about events in her life that occured ten years before in 2001?Beautifully filmed and scored with techno trance music, the film gives intimate views of Vicky's life with Hao-Hao (her wacked, druggie boyfriend who refuses to work) and Jack (the older caretaker-type). We see a recap of events that illustrates her immature, frustrating relationship with Hao-Hao set across Tapei's nightlife that causes her to yo-yo between him and her emotional caretaker, Jack.
Well, acted and compelling I was drawn in and hated to see it end. The director, in bonus features, said the intial concept was a six-hour feature. Too bad that's not coming in the directors cut.
