films: several directors actually pre-dated the Godards and the Bunuels in making strong political statements. Many of the listed films are considered classics, but for some reason they haven't become very well known here (in Europe, they are moreso).
Central Station, City of God, Dona Flor and her Two Husbands... these films were possible because of the pioneering works done under the threat of death from the violent military dictatorship in Brasil at the time.
Try some and find out a bit more about a very different culture--- it ain't all samba and soccer.
