. . . were directed by Jerome Robbins. Robbins was taken out of the director's chair by the studio because he was taking too long and costing the studio too much money. Wise replaced him.The opening sequence, "America," the mambo/rumble dance sequence in the gym were all Robbins's work. All of Wise's scenes are annoyingly static in comparison.
