"La Notte:" a perfect example of a film which tries, and must fail, to

portray the lack of soul in modern society by showing boring people very slowly doing nothing and being bored: it is hoped by the director that by showing this level of boredom, the audience will more understand their "ennui." But in skewing the upper bourgeoisie, he shows that he also shares their lack of passion.
Well, what happens is that the audience becomes... sleepy.
If the film were a bit less languid, it would be more powerful. Mastroianni is his detached, sophisticated best but with the wooden, sulky Jeanne Moreau to play against, he has a hard time of it. I am prejudiced against this icon of the New Wave of European film: I find her singularly unattractive or talented.
Seldom can one find more boring scenes in film than those in this movie wherein the characters read long passages from a book and a letter.
Now, if you can just fast forward at certain times ( 2x, occasionally) you may well find you enjoy it more. The cinematography, score, and sets are wonderful.
This film leaves one feeling as one does after a meal in which the food is excellent but the service is terribly, ridiculously slow.
