Director of Photography lights set (not to be confused with cameraman...who is operator) Michael Mann, among a few others, directs, lights and even shoots (camera operator) his films. The director typically works just with the actors. Some directors praised for their "camera work" or "framing," "blocking" or even "camera movement" in scenes/shots have no such input-- by choice, by dint of ignorance of such things, or general laziness. (Ask anyone who ever worked on a Woody Allen "show". He hires great DPs and they make all the critical visual choices in his films.Due to the conservatory approach to teaching film elsewhere in the world, most of the European directors have learned lighting, lenses, camera operation, etc. during their training...
